A STAY IN SHERWOOD
Sherwood Forerst Bed and Breakfast
Douglas, Michigan
The Saugatuck/Douglas area has so many wonderful bed-
and-breakfasts that
it
has earned the nickname “The Bed-and-Breakfast Capital of the Midwest.” One
of the friendliest is Sherwood Forest, just a half block from Lake Michigan and
surrounded by woods.
Owned by Chicago expatriates Keith and Susan Charak. the Queen Anne-style
home was built for a local pastor, who lived in it until 1958. Today, guests
enjoy
the wide wraparound porch, hardwood floors and leaded glass windows, as well
as Susan’s blueberry coffee cake, cinnamon-orange French toast and potato
quiche, served in the lace-trimmed dining room or on the spacious from porch.
It’s an easy walk or bike ride lo the beach and a short drive into Saugatuck
or to the nearby wooded dunes, which are full of great hiking paths. If you’re
looking to extend that natural feel, consider requesting the inn’s Treetops
Room, lined with murals that make you feel as if you’re sleeping in a treehouse.
It’s one of five creatively decorated rooms, some of which have fireplaces
and Jacuzzis. Another favorite is the Log Cabin Suite, which includes a double-sided
gas fireplace - one side to warm the bedroom, the other facing a 125-gallon Jacuzzi.
